Contour kits have been having a huge moment over the past year at least. Almost every brand is bringing out their versions, some are doing a basic one shade contour and highlight, others are bringing out larger palettes with a variety of different shades included. High end beauty brands, such as Anastasia Beverly Hills, do these kits pretty darn well, and ABH was one of the first to bring out a large palette with a selection of shades. Now, there are many affordable brands offering a similar thing for a fraction of the price, like this Ultra Contour Palette* from Makeup Revolution.
Makeup Revolution was founded in the UK a few years back and started making big waves throughout social media and grew as a brand very quickly. They offer very affordable products and they 'dupes' of brands like Too Faced, Stila etc. They definitely have some hit and miss products from what I've tired, but things like their eye shadow palettes (like the New-trals vs. Neutrals palette, swatches here) are really beautiful and great quality. The Ultra Contour Palette comes with eight shades, four highlighting and four contouring shades, with the inclusion of two of their baked highlighters to compliment the shades in the palette.
Compared to a couple of other Contour Kits I own, such as the Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit (top; USD $40.00 or NZD $99.00) and the Australis AC On Tour Contouring + Highlighting Palette (left; NZD $21.50), the Ultra Contour Palette is extremely similar in shades, and pan sizes. The price is around the same as the Australis one, NZD $22.00, or £8.00, but I think the quality is slightly better on the Makeup Revolution one, plus you get two extra highlighters. Packaging wise I think the Makeup Revoultion palette is the sturdiest, with a solid black plastic outer - definitely more durable than the ABH one which is made from cardboard.
The powders are very pigmented, so a light tap with a brush in the pan is all you need. This will help ensure you don't look like you've smeared a bit of dirt on the side of your face; using it lightly and building it up will help to give you a natural looking shadow. For highlighting, the palette has two matte shades, a light pink and yellow (great for under the eyes), as well as a shimmery champagne. For contouring there are three matte shades, ranging from warm to cool. The middle one is the best for contouring, while the others can be used as a traditional bronzer around the perimeter of the face. The powders blend well, although not quite as nice as the ABH ones, but that's to be expected.
The two baked highlighters are a nice addition to this selection, the lighter shade is very golden/yellow based, and the darker shade is very bronzey, great for a darker complexion. They're definitely not a subtle highlight and can come across quite chunky and glittery if you don't use them lightly and blend well.
If you are in the market for a more affordable contouring option I would suggest this one over the Australis one, as the powders are a bit smoother and you get two extra shades! Makeup Revolution can now be brought from Beauty Bliss in NZ, who ship to NZ and Australia.
