WINTER BEAUTY TRENDS | PRODUCT EDIT - CassandraMyee

We're well into Winter here in NZ and as it gets a bit chillier, I find I reach for different products and shades when I'm doing my makeup. In the winter I feel like you can get away with darker tones on the eyes and lips, and the skin always looks a bit healthier and less dull with some glow. I've collated a range of products that I think are perfect for this season and would make a great addition to your makeup bag if you want to change thing up this Winter.

FRESH DEWY SKIN

I am blessed with naturally dewy skin (a.k.a. it is quite oily), so although I like to keep things matte, I do like to inject some glow back into the skin but in the right places. Base wise there are some foundations that will help you achieve a glowing base.

The YSL Touche Eclat Le Teint Awakening Foundation* (NZD $98.00) is luxurious not only in its bottle but the foundation inside. I find this gives medium coverage, it can be built up and it leaves the skin looking smoother, fresher with a natural glow to it. On the cheaper scale Maybelline offer the Fit Me Dewy + Smooth Foundation* (NZD $24.99), great for those with dry skin. This is really dewy for me, I definitely prefer the Matte + Poreless version but for normal and dry skin tones this makes a great everyday foundation; it's light, blends well and provides light to medium coverage. The cushions are having a moment right now and the new L'Oreal Nude Magique Cushion Foundation* (NZD $33.99) provides a glow but works well for my oily/combination skin. It's more on the lighter side with coverage but you can build it up in certain areas. I think this is definitely the foundation of the moment. In keeping with the dewy skin, cream products will always blend well and look a bit more natural on the skin; Australis now have their AC On Tour Contouring + Highlighting Kit* (NZD $27.50) in a cream formulation.

Keeping on the natural complexion train, concealer wise, a highlighting concealer like the Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Concealer* ($19.99) and the L'Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Highlighter Pen* ($30.99) help to brighten the under eyes and complexion with a lighter coverage. To set everything down the new Bobbi Brown Nude Finish Illuminating Powders* ($99.00) sets the skin, but keeps the glow with light reflecting particles. The shade I have is Golden - great for a darker complexion. For highlighters and shimmery blushes, the amazing Becca Afterglow Palette* (NZD $72.00, swatches and review here) is a must have with five smaller pans of their staple shades.

As I mentioned above, cream products always look more natural on the skin. In the Winter I love using a cream blush to warm up my complexion and add some natural colour. beautyblender have added a new sponge to their family with the medium sized grey beauty.blusher* (NZD $34.00 from Beauty Bliss), perfect for applying cream blush, bronzer and highlighter. The Becca Cosmetics Beach Tint in Fig* (NZD $46.00 from Beauty Bliss) is such a gorgeous shade for winter and it can be used on the cheeks and as a lip colour too. The colour comes out strongly pigmented but blends easily either with your fingers of the beauty.blusher. Maybelline Master Glaze Blush Sticks* ($14.99) come in a bunch of shades and you can dot them on the cheeks and blend out. This shade Just Pinched Pink is really natural and beautiful. The ColourPop Super Shock Cheeks (USD $8.00) are such an amazing formula, they go on as a cream and set to powder. Between The Sheets is a matte shade, and the dusty rose looks beautiful on the skin.

SMOKEY EYES

Colder weather calls for darker shadows in my opinion, although you can rock a smokey eye whenever and where you please. There's plenty of eyeshadow options in various forms, you could opt for a palette like this gorgeous Lancome Hypnose Star Eyes 5 Color Palette in Brun Adore* ($105.00) that has more plum tones in it, or the L'Oreal Colour Riche Les Ombres in Incredible Grey* ($29.99) is a cheaper alternative with more grey/silver tones in it (see swatches below). Both palettes have great pigmentation and perform really well.

Other options for your smokey/darker lids are the Maybelline Color Molten Eye Shadows* ($13.99) that come in a variety of duo shades. They have two shades included and have this bouncy cream texture to them which sets down to powder on the lids. The L'Oreal Superliner Smokissime in 100 Black Smoke* ($22.99) applies onto the lids with ease and can be blended out for a very dark smokey shadow.

Keeping in the eye department, no look is complete without your brows on point and lashings of mascara. Estee Lauder has the new Brow Now Collection, with a Volumising Brow Tint* ($56.00) and Brow Defining Pencil* ($56.00) among other products. The Brow Tint is amazing with a tiny wand that really helps to add colour and volume to sparse brows. For mascara, I have been loving TheBalm Mad Lash Black Mascara* (NZD $29.00), it has a curved brush which gives a great curl and length to the lashes.

DARK/BERRY LIPS

To finish off my Winter Product Edit, I couldn't not talk about lipsticks. There are just so many amazing brands with amazing shades available so it was hard to nail down the ones I wanted to feature. Maybelline's Creamy Matte* ($19.99)  range has been a favourite for a few months now, they have a matte finish but they are still very comfortable on the lips. L'Oreal also has some lovely darker shades in the Colour Riche Lipstick* ($23.99 each) range; Mon Jules is one of their matte shades and Intense Plum has a creamy finish with that darker berry colour. For a very luxe lipstick, I think YSL take the cake for quality in packaging and product. The Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick in 09 Rose Stiletto* ($65.00) is a muted berry that will work with so many makeup looks. One of my favourite things for winter is actually a matte lip, which I think contrasts well with a more dewy base. Smashbox has brought out this ingenious little tube called the Insta-Matte Lipstick Transformer* ($48.00). It works by mattifying a creamy lipstick to have a satin/matte finish. It doesn't work on lip glosses or balms, but for creamy lipsticks is does the trick! It has a silicone feel to it, much like a primer, it also makes the lipstick feel really comfortable on the lips and prevents it from being too sticky.

That brings me to the end of this month Winter Beauty Product Edit. I hope it might have given you some inspiration on what products to add to your routine, or some trends to try out.

What do you like doing with your makeup in the winter?
