Lip liners are a makeup must have for me - I wear them on their own all the time as I love the matte finish and they often last longer than any lipstick or even matte liquid lipstick does due to the light formula but high pigmentation of most lip liners these days. One of my favourite affordable brands, Maybelline, has just launched a new line of liners; the Color Sensational Shaping Lip Liners*. As a big lip liner lover (and I have tried quite a few), these ones are definitely up there with some of the better ones...
Maybelline has launched six shades, ranging from reds to nudes and there should be a shade to match most lip colours that you may use. The packaging is a thin twist up style pencil with the colour clearly indicated on the lids of the liners. They twist up to reveal a thin nib which means you can get a more precise line, but they also work well to fill in the entire lip with colour as well.
Formula wise they do everything a lip liner should do - they are creamy to apply but also are a bit stiffer so you can get that more precise line. They have a matte finish which lasts pretty much all day for me; it means that you can wear these alone, or if you use a product over top you know that the liner will still be mostly in tact once the lip colour has worn away. Once you first use them they have a sharp tip, but as you use it, they do wear down and they aren't easy to sharpen and get the sharp pencil tip back - it's not a huge deal but something to note.
The six shades cover the red, nudes and pink spectrum of things. 125 Magnetic Mauve* and 130* Dusty Rose have been getting the most use from me as these are the sorts of shade I use so often and match many of my liquid lipsticks. It's great they have a red shade as it is always good to use a lip liner on the brighter shades to get a crisp lip line.
As part of the PR set that Maybelline sent, they included matching lip colours from their extensive range of options in all sorts of finishes and formulas. Using a lip liner works with any formula and is a great way to provide greater depth of colour on the lips and also make the shades more true to colour paired with a similar lip liner.
