With ball/formal season underway in New Zealand, it can always be a stressful time for us ladies trying to decide what to wear, how do we want our hair, do we go for a dark lip or nude... and it goes on! I remember my school formals and dances were always such fun nights and while a few had their hair and makeup professionally done, I always went for the DIY approach. Getting ready with your best friends at home always makes the experience that much better. Although you can go all out, I think sometimes it's good to save a few dollars and put that towards an amazing dress, or some new shoes. ghd offers the perfect hair tools to make getting ready at home, that little bit easier.

There's a new hair straightener in town from ghd that is so red carpet/formal appropriate, it's not even funny! The ghd V gold ruby sunset styler* comes in the most amazing vivid red shade with an exclusive heat-resistant bag so it's easy to travel with or transport around with you if you are staying at a friends or partners houses. ghd is one of the OG's when it comes to hair straighteners and they're such a trusted brand. I have had my current ghd platinum styler for over 2 years and it is still working just as well as it did when I first got it. The beauty with them is they can be used to create a multitude of different looks and styles.

You have to admit that is one gorgeous looking straightener! The simple and sleek design means that they perform to the highest standard. If you have used a ghd before, you will know how quickly these things heat up. Within about 5 seconds it is up to its optimal temperature of 185 degrees Celsius, so it's hot enough to style but not too hot that it is going to fry your hair (don't forget to use a heat protectant regularly though!) They have a super long, almost 3m cord that swivels so you can rotate and get it around each part of the hair. One of my favourite features is that it will automatically shut off about 30 mins of non-use - honestly, there is nothing worse than being halfway through your day and suddenly that sinking feeling of 'shit, did I leave the straightener on?!' washes over you. I know we've probably all been there!

When it comes to styling your hair for your upcoming occasion there are so many options you can go for. Obviously one of the main ways to use the ghd ruby sunset styler is to get your hair sleek and straight. This is such simple, but polished look and means you can focus on doing something a bit more daring with your makeup, such as a bright red lip! I also think pulling the hair back in a sleek, low ponytail looks amazing too, especially if you have medium to long hair. ghd makes your hair look super glossy and frizz-free due to the ceramic plates they use for their straighteners.

I am one of those people who have both a straightener and a curler, but it's actually pretty easy to create soft, bouncy curls with your ghd! I won't lie in saying that it does take a little bit too perfect the art of the ghd curl but once you have the hang of it, the effect is stunning. For my school formals, I would always curl my hair as I find it the most flattering on me. The ghd curl can be easily achieved with a little know-how: take a section of hair (not too much) and put the hair in the straightener clamped down, and then do one full turn, this will trap the hair around the whole straightener and then you just gently pull down. Once released, there's your curl! From here, you can leave the hair in tousled curls, brush through to create romantic waves, or pin bits up and make a gorgeous updo.

A ghd is always going to be a great hair tool to have around and a worthy investment in my eyes! The ruby sunset styler is limited edition so if you want to get your hands on this tropical-inspired design, you can purchase it in NZ for NZD $310 direct from the ghd website (also available globally).

What hairstyles did you or will you rock for your school formal/ball? I'd love to hear (or hair... get it?!)
