New Zealand is well into the thick of winter now, we've got snow warnings in the South Island and typical Aucklander's are complaining about the 'cold' (I am one of these people so don't take offense to that!) It is definitely a stark difference to the heat wave happening in the Northern Hemisphere right now. I find in the cooler months it is easy to get stuck in a beauty rut, but it doesn't have to be all warm neutral shades and dusty rose, or berry lipsticks. It's time to inject some colour, life and brightness into your beauty routine, which might just make the chillier months go a little quicker.
SCENTS
It is very easy to neglect the lighter summer fragrances for something a bit more winter appropriate but a nice fresh, floral or sweet scent is an instant mood booster, it also helps the bottles are so pretty. I have three above which are all so beautiful. BVLGARI Omnia Paraiba* was launched in Summer 2015 and is a gorgeous floral and fruity scent. It has notes of bitter orange, passion fruit, gardenia, vetiver and cocoa. The bottle is amazing and so iconic.
Viktor & Rolf Bonbon Spring Summer* is a new release to the Bonbon family that is a bit lighter and it will give you the ultimate summertime vibes. It has notes of tangerine, grapefruit, orange, blackcurrant, with a base of caramel, musk, and cedar. I always find whenever I wear this it instantly uplifts my mood and is a good one if you like the fruity scents.
The original Marc Jacobs Daisy* is a classic fragrance; the bottle is so reminiscent of Spring, with the daisy flowers on the lid. Scent wise it is very fresh, with notes of strawberry, violet petals, gardenia and jasmine, with woody notes of birch and cedarwood.
HAIR
There's nothing like a decent hair cut or colour to update your look and I am constantly dying my own hair and love experimenting with colour. L'Oreal has created an amazing new range called the Colorista which includes Washout Colours*, and 1-Day Colour Sprays* to instantly update your look. The 1-Day Sprays come in amazing shades, like this pastel blue one, or hot pink, there's also mint green and purple too. These would work better on blonde, or light blonde hair and show up quite subtle on my own as I am fairly dark right now. I am tempted to do an ombre so I can use these shades more! The Washout colours provide 2 weeks of colour with some super vivid shades in the range.
SKIN
Highlighters are great at any time of the year, but particularly good for winter when you might be looking a bit dull and need an extra boost to the skin. There are plenty of illuminating foundations out there, as well as powder highlighters, but sometimes a cream will give you a more natural looking and intense glow. YSL is launching a new addition to the Touche Eclat this month, the Touche Eclat White Strobing Pen*, a pure white highlighter. I really enjoy the original Touche Eclat and love the idea of this white one. Under the eyes, it helps to really brighten, but like the original, it doesn't create that much coverage so it is best paired with a concealer, and used either over, or underneath it. Along the cheekbones and bridge of the nose, it works well though to softly illuminate. For a super intense strobe, the new Maybelline Strobing Liquid Illuminating Highlighter* is absolutely stunning. It comes out as a cream and almost looks like liquid metal. It can be mixed in with a foundation/base to add some amazing luminosity, or used lightly and tapped on the high points of the face like a traditional highlighter.
A good skincare routine is a must in Winter too, as even the oiliest of skin can get dehydrated and dry. The Kiehl's Calendula & Aloe Soothing Hydration Masque* is a dry skin saviour. It cools and calms the skin while adding a good shot of hydration and instantly boosts tired skin.
LIPS + EYES
It is easy to reach for the berry or nude tones during this time of the year, but who says you can't wack on a bright pink? Not only are you going to look and feel a bit more confident, others will probably be thinking 'damn that lip colour is poppin' and I need to step up my game! ' L'Oreal's new Lip Paints* come in 10 different shades and while there are a few nude tones, most of them are incredibly bold and bright. They have two finishes, matte and lacquer and apply with a doe foot sponge. The hot pinks are pretty amazing!
I am sure you have all heard of Avon, well they have just relaunched with their True Colour range, aiming them at a younger audience (Avon always seemed like an 'old' brand, if you know what I mean). The lipsticks* have a cream finish, and are going to give you some nourishment which is especially good if you suffer from dry lips.
Elizabeth Arden has come to the party with their new Tropical Escape Collection (very appropriate for this time of year.... damn being on the opposite side of the world!) The Sheer Kiss Lip Oils* come in this very unique and funky round package and you squeeze the middle part to dispense the colour. Although it says sheer in the name, you do get quite a bit of colour payoff with them, but they feel so nice on the lips with coconut oil and avocado oil to hydrate and protect.
If you want to go really bold in the eyes, the new L'Oreal Miss Baby Roll Mega Volume Mascara* in Blue is a fun way to get some colour on the eyes without things looking too 80s prom. A bit of blue mascara on the tips of the lashes, or on the bottom lashes is a great way to change things up from the regular black mascara. Teamed with a bit of light shimmer on the lids, this is a good way to update your everyday makeup.
There are heaps of products out there that will get you out of the usual winter beauty routine rut, but I think these recent releases are a good place to start. Hopefully, it will just get us a little bit closer to summertime!
