This was one of the new Maybelline releases that I was waiting to arrive in NZ and now they are finally here! I went to an amazing launch a couple months back (which honestly only feels like last week), where we had a peek at all the new products and got the most generous goodie bag. I did an overview post of the new releases (see it here) and only touched on these briefly as I wanted to do a whole blog post about the new Color Sensational Vivid Liquid Matte Lipsticks*, and here it is!
Matte lips are one of the biggest beauty trends we've seen this year, with so many brands throwing their hat in the ring and offering their own take on them. Some I've tried are super drying, others a bit flakey, and some that are just top notch and I absolutely love. These sit somewhere in between, for one reason only - they aren't what you might expect a traditional liquid matte lipstick to be...
The Vivid Liquid Matte Range has seven pretty incredible shades, that definitely are vivid and extremely pigmented. One swipe and you have an incredible pop of colour on the lips. My only issue with these, which might not be an issue for some of you is that these don't dry down to a matte finish on the lips. The name is deceiving - I would say these are just highly pigmented liquid lipsticks with a slighty matte, more satin finish to the lips.
If I take out the 'matte' in the name, then I can give you more of an idea what to expect with these new lip products. The colour range is fabulous as you can see in the swatches, they have a couple of nude shades, as well as some a super vibrant pink, red and orange along with a deeper berry. The doefoot applicator on these is long and thin which allows you to get a bit more precision around the lips, but the flat edges mean you can swipe on the bulk of the colour quickly. I would say a liner would make application a whole lot easier; because they are so pigmented that can go a little astray around the mouth. And as these don't dry down to a complete matte finish, they are going to transfer and get on your teeth if you don't do the 'stick your finger in your mouth, pull it out again' trick.
Really, they wear like your normal lipstick, with a satin-ish finish on the lips, but are slightly more long wearing and leave a little stain (particularly the brighter tones). I have found that blotting the lips with a tissue gives you a more matte look whilst maintaining the high pigment but makes them a little less likely to transfer or smudge. The pro, I guess, is that they aren't totally matte which means it doesn't accentuate dry or cracked lips, and they are very comfortable to wear.
These retail for $19.99 each, and are available where ever Maybelline is sold. For those who aren't totally on board with the matte liquid lipstick trend, these might be a good jumping point to getting into them!
Have you tried these Vivid Liquid Matte Lipsticks yet? What do you think of the shades?
